police are not saying. christopher kohrs turned himself in hours after the wreck sunday morning and gave a statement but it is not clear whether he confessed. >> sobriety is something that investigators are looking into as part of their investigation. and i don't have further details on that. >> i don't believe he was intoxicated. i haven't seen anything. >> reporter: he is his attorney. >> he was in the car at the time. we will wait on the investigation to be done. at this point we are not ready to say he was behind the wheel. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> i am going to wait till the investigation is done before we -- before we sea say anything at this point in time. >> reporter: he hurt his knee chasing a bad guy. at this point according to policy he cannot be suspected while on medical -- suspended

while on medical leave. she up on two felony charges. >> interesting video. joe vazquez on broadway, thank you. fire on a cruise ship delaying a hawaiian vacation. kpix 5's juliette goodrich following developments. >> the scare started this morning with a fire in the engine room, caused the ship to lose power. it left from san francisco 5 days ago and 500 miles from hawaii and that is when the fire erupted. this pictures was sent to us from a passenger. the crew put out the fire but left the ship with power outages. they have been told the trip is going on with just one engine and they won't stop in hilo as

planned. and they are heading to honolulu for repairs. that is supposed to happen tomorrow. they gave us a statement a couple hours ago. the incident was isolated but did cause a power outage resultingane temporary use of emergency lighting and limited air conditioning. power has now been restored and no one was hurt in the fire. there are 2600 passengers on board. they are supposed to return to san francisco on december 10. no word on whether today's fire is going to delay the ship. juliette goodrich, back to you. live pictures of the bomb squad working at construction site. police say crews digging dug up a grenade. streets are blocked off. one business is evacuated. there are no homes in the area. the bomb squad is to dispose of the device.

tonight we are hearing how officers monitored a speeding car that crashed. take a listen. [ indiscernible ] >> the driver slammed into tree. the force of the impact nearly splitting the car in half. the driver, a 19-year-old, died. the two men inside are in critical condition. police say the car was reported stolen. a one-two punch from mother nature. a cold morning followed by spotty showers. 29 degrees, the reading in walnut creek. when it gets that cold that could mean a layer of frost.

rain in san mateo earlier today and this shot summed it up. light rain, clouds around the bay area and looks like more wet weather is on the way. our chief meteorologist paul deanno is here. the outlook for the dreaded el nino. >> it is coming. above average rain for december, january, february and march but the rain for today is wrapping up. scattered showers today. try conditions now, the last spot to see rain was towards the delta. antioch, pittsburg, discovery bay, concord and clayton. showers in the past couple hours. 1/8-inch in hayward.

police are looking for who stole 26 mountain bikes from vi . theft at san francisco middle school over the weekend. police are looking looking for whoever stole 26 mountain bikes. the thieves broke into a school shed and made off with 9,000 dollars worth of bikes. one grocery store owner is replacing all of them. >> when things like this happens it is a call for us to step up and be a part of the community. that is what we do. it is not just being a store and having a business, we like to be involved. >> the school says the bikes will help kids learn how to ride during their physical

education classes and it teaches rider safety and laws. the man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death in san mateo. police say the 22-year-old anthony kirincic is considered armed and dangerous. his girlfriend called 911 and said he was stabbed. by the time police arrived it was too late. >> a large search area. we are not keeping it limited to the bay area. keeping open about all leads in finding where the suspect is. >> police say if you see this guy do not approach him. call 911 immediately. the man accused of killing three people at a planned parenthood in colorado springs made his first appearance in court today. robert lewis dear appeared before the judgeane video feed. his -- judge in a video feed. the suspect spoke briefly to

answer basic questions. she held on first degree murder charges for killing two civilians and a police officer. she expected to be charged on december 9. jury selection in the trial of one of six baltimore police officers accused of killing freddie gray. william porter was escorted into the court today. the prosecution says porter should have gotten medical attention for the 25-year-old. protesters were outside today. a reminder of the tension surrounding his death. >> i want those guys to have a fair trial. i really do. let justice prevail. but police let there be justice. >> we are waiting to hear the truth. we are waiting to hear what happened to freddie gray and what evidence the prosecution will present. >> the trial is the first of the six police officers accused. he is expected to testify in

we had a front move through today. rain. we had scattered showers throughout the bay area. that is now finished. the onshore flow will keep us warmer. it continues. for the next couple days high pressure will build to the south and rest. sunny. we will make it -- west. sunny. that bridge moves out for thursday. thursday a stronger cold front moves in. it will bring moisture and wind. we will go from calm weather to active weather on thursday. north bay could see more than an inch of rainfall coming up on thursday. wet and windy. freezing nights. they are done for now. it will be cooler than average and thursday will be the stormy day, rain and wind. san jose 60 tomorrow with sunny skies. palo alto 58.
